Amazon’s bid to drum up interest, attention and some market share for its new cloud music push took an unwanted turn yesterday when their “doorbuster” offer of Lady Gaga’s new album “Born This Way” for 99 cents caused their servers to grind to a near halt under the load.
Hard on the heals of the recent severe Amazon Web Services outage in Northern Virginia, this will doubtless cause more rethinking of the whole cloud paradigm. Amazon’s Cloud Player Service uses AWS, and AWS is supposed to be capable of “elastic response to demand”. The reality is reflected in the message customers saw:
Amazon is experiencing high volume and downloads are delayed. If customers order today, they will get the full Lady Gaga, Born This Way album for $0.99. Thanks for your patience.
Time will tell if the notoriety helps or hurts Amazon’s Cloud Player initiative.
